Congratulations, Ann! This looks incredible and I can't wait to see and share it with others. Your husband had an immense impact on my own journey into the Cosmos. It was he who showed me that even though I am not a professional scientist, I am still made of star stuff like everyone else and can cultivate my own educated and passionate love affair with the Universe.

But over time, it is you who has fascinated me the most: a woman married to someone possessing a great intellect and powerful presence who was nonetheless able to find her own place and voice within that relationship. The story of your life is compelling. Long after Carl's passing, your passion for scientific truth and education still shines like a candle in the darkness of our current society and despite that darkness, you maintain a clear-eyed optimism about the future. I draw inspiration from your work and, especially, that optimism. I too was married to someone possessing a great intellect and powerful presence but somehow lost my way. Presently and happily, I am rediscovering my own place and voice within the Cosmos and wanted you to know that you yourself inspire others, apart from your husband's legacy. May your sparkling spirit continue to shine for a long time.

It looks good Ann. I hope you will be taking part in some viewing parties around the world, or at least around the country in the next year. Maybe you can make a swing up to Portland for an OMSI event. I can't wait to see the first episode.

Beloved Ann,
Wherever you are in the vastness of the cosmos , I hope you'll read this at some point in the immensity of time . This is a brief account of my love affair with the heavens , science and the late , great Dr Sagan .
Growing up as a kid , I was always fascinated by aircrafts soaring high in the sky. The marvel of their flight seemed magical at the time . As I got older , I learned of rocket propulsion systems and spacecrafts - thanks to the pioneering efforts of Robert Goddard . Watching those machines flung out in the vast emptiness that surrounded our tiny world for the very first time made me wonder about what lay beyond- in the great depths of space and time . That was the day I fell in love with astronomy which long predates my discovery of your beloved other half .
I've since been an amateur astronomer and I've been studying astrophysics on the web . One of my favorite past times was to tune into the internet radio station AFM , short for Astronomy FM . One fine day while I was listening , it happened to coincide with Dr Carl's Birthday - and AFM was airing a special program to celebrate the occasion . The program " Carl Sagan Special " began airing at 10pm IST , November the 10th,2012.
You were the chief guest for the event . I knew nothing about either you or Carl until then . The next hour or so would go on to revolutionize the rest of my life . I'd never ever seen you or heard of you before and here I was ,listening to the melody of your voice , mesmerized by the soaring scientifically spiritual high any listener would experience after hearing the sound of your voice. You were narrating some of your personal experiences with your husband - how easily he attracted the attention of seemingly huge audiences. One of the accounts you recalled was that of a confrontation a man had with carl which ended up with a query . The man asked Dr Carl " What do I do, now that you've taken all the meaning out of my life ?" and Carl replied " DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL ". That line said by you took my breath away . For the rest of the show , you and the guys from AFM were fawning over the greatness of his legacy - so completely in awe of him that it drove me desperate to find out who this mystery man was. Guest after guest arrived and they had all but praise for him - the suspense just kept growing for me . The final guest for the show was Dr Neil Degrasse Tyson and believe it or not , it was the first time I was hearing from him as well. The fact that they introduced him as an astrophysicist was enough to get me interested in listening further - He narrated one of his life's high school experiences at Cornell - Carl drove him all the way to your home and then dropped him back to a busstop . Neil recalled Carl's generosity and wisdom towards an unknown kid . And since that day , Dr Degrasse Tyson borrowed an example from Carl's book . He would always attend any student's queries first (as a priority) and only then would he get back to the other renown minds he had pending business with . How nice had Carl been to him that it changed him forever . Listening to that show on AFM that night transformed my life forever and I still recall it today . It was you Ann , who introduced me to Carl , who in my words is for billions , a conduit to the amazing universe that we're part of and which is also a part of us , to quote Dr Neil .
A few days later , I saw the movie CONTACT totally unaware of the fact that it was based on a novel written by Carl . I was instantly a fan of the film and it remains my favorite science-fiction film to this day . It made me fall in love with Jodie Foster who recently appeared in the movie "Elysium " a recommended film for space fans . At the end of the movie "contact " two words flashed across the screen ' FOR CARL' - and that made me think -no way this could be linked to Dr Sagan.
The very next day , I did a wikisearch on Carl and was mightily impressed with all his accomplishments and some of his quotes deeply touched me. The fact that Contact was a novel written by the same mystery man I'd heard about on a radio show turned me into an avid Sagan fan even without having ever seen or hearing him. I also looked you up on google for a picture of you as I'd never seen you before Ann. You looked beautiful.
The first clip related to Carl that I saw on the internet was "The Pale blue dot " . That was the first time I heard Carl's voice and it blew my mind.
I'd read about his famous series Cosmos on wikipedia but hadn't seen it yet . When Cosmos was first broadcast , I wasn't even born . Finally on January the 3rd , earlier this year , I found the Cosmos - with all of it's 13 updated episodes on the Science Foundation's youtube channel. It marked the first time that I got of glimpse of Carl - his physical appearance was way too different than anything I'd contemplated. But listening to him was like being under a magical spell as if you are in a trance. The harmony and the scientific poetry in voice clearly reflected his passion for science and his enthusiasm for sharing it . "Carl Sagan's Cosmos : A personal voyage" is literally the best thing I've ever seen. What an amazing work you , Steven sotor and Carl had authored. I have all the 13 episodes on my android and I view them anytime I need inspiration or simply to relieve my mind by indulging into the awesomeness of Carl - often a welcome relief from the little problems of my insignificant life in the grand sweep of time. Most recently , I saw a video of you at the comic con with Dr Degrasse tyson when you released this trailer of the upcoming series in 2014. I can simply contemplate what wonders await the present generation in the form this new ' Cosmos: A spacetime Odessey ' . I wish you all the very best in your great endeavor to promote scientific literacy . This trailer is mind boggling , I must say. When my cousin first broke out the news of a new Cosmos series to me ,it drove me crazy. I can't help but wait .
I also discovered the Sagan series (made by Reid gower) in an attempt to disseminate scientific literacy and enlightenment to the masses . It, along with the symphony of science that I saw just an hour ago are astonishingly beautiful in their depiction of the Scientific enterprise.
I've also been following the Solar sail project keenly on the Planetary Society's website and I dream that within our lifetime , we may send the first robot explorers to alpha centauri and the nearby star systems.
I come from India , a country where the pseudoscience of astrology still prevails and flourishes. I run an Astronomy Club at the Maharashtra Institute of Technology , pune , India. It's disheartening when people mistake our club as an astrology club -that goes to show the impact of the pseudo science on this corner of the pale blue dot. Both my parents are superstitious and religious . Despite my several attempts , I couldn't budge their belief in faith based ideologies -and I look for some guidance from you on this matter , Ann. What's also heartbreaking Ann , is the poverty in our country - underprivileged kids suffer from malnutrition and that makes me sad. I wish I could do something for them.
Currently , I'm studying physics and aspire to do my major in astrophysics in one of the premier research institutes in India -IISc , Bangalore. Our Astronomy Club screens a weekly episode of the Cosmos series on a giant screen for an audience of 150 students. We're doing our very best to promote Carl's ideas and his passion for science. In my opinion , he's by far the best thing that ever happened to the Scientific enterprise which I hope will be boosted by forthcoming generations that will watch the new series you're working on. Their couldn't be a better host than Dr Neil.
Looking back , I now recall reading Stephen Hawking's ' A brief history of Time' seven years ago- little had I known that the other name on

WOW!

This looks great on so many levels. Beauty, dreams, life's journeys and beyond!

It's funny the complex life choices we make and the directions they take us..... I too LOVE Contact and didn't know Carl had written it; but cry every time I watch it seeing the end tribute to Carl, having grown up in wonderment of what he shared with us.

It's watching young - (he's only 5 years younger than me, but geez, he ages well!) - Proff Brian Cox and seeing his enthusiasm and energy in his work now knowing what Carl brought us for all those years... and nice to know he watched and valued Carl's wisdom and work, and being a source of personal inspiration for him also.

Gaining an insight into Brian's background gave me a chance to look again at Carl's journey and the directions taken by his respective past.

I'm sitting here, writing from an Apple Mac, which is utilised in the work of one of Carl's own sons, the stories and films that bring his ideas to light by other respective members of his family, and looking at the work Carl has done... with the intensity and passion given to keep the 'dream' and insight alive by Ann.

The future looks great!

For that, I sit here with tears in my eyes, reflecting on my life and say THANKYOU to you and your family/extended working family Ann.

Ann,

I have to admit, whenever I watch the original Cosmos, whether it's on DVD from the library or on Netflix streaming, I tend to get really emotional; something about your husband's words has always touched that chord deep inside me. I just watched the trailer for the new Cosmos, and I can't wait. Thanks for letting us all share in this extraordinary journey.

I'm amazed, I have to admit. Seldom do I encounter a blog that's both educative and amusing, and let me tell you, you have hit the nail on the head. The problem is something too few men and women are speaking intelligently about. I am very happy I stumbled across this during my search for something relating to this.
